Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. The body of men contains 1000-1200 g of calcium, and that of women 700-800 g. About 99% of the total calcium content is found in bones and teeth, the remaining 1% in blood plasma, cells and the space between cells. The magnesium content of the body, on the other hand, is only 20-30 g. The stocked quantity is approx. 60% of it is contained in bones and teeth, and the rest in blood plasma, cells and organs.

The main regulators of calcium metabolism are parathormone, calcitonin and estrogen. Several factors affect the absorption and metabolism of both calcium and magnesium. These include vitamin E and vitamin D supply; fat digestion or absorption disorder (e.g. liver diseases, Crohn's disease); the protein content of the diet; and the composition of the food (phytate, oxalate, phosphorus content).

In sports nutrition , there are two established dietary habits that greatly influence the utilization of the two macroelements.
